Methodology

This index compares all 50 states across four normalized indicators. A higher Kink Score means stronger combined signals of adult-store access, online search interest, and self-reported sexual frequency. It should not be read as a measure of individual behavior.

Weighted inputs

Weights balance offline adult-oriented access, online curiosity, and self-reported activity. Adult-store density is weighted highest as a proxy for local access.

How the score was built

  • Adult-store counts come from OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API, using locations tagged as shop=erotic. Missing state markers were assigned via Nominatim reverse geocoding.
  • Average sex frequency comes from the NapLab Sex Survey and is based on state-level self-reported data, so it may include survey response bias.
  • NSFW content and kink search volumes come from Google Keyword Planner estimates in the supplied campaign dataset, normalized per population.
  • Each metric was converted to a percentile rank so states could be compared on the same scale, then combined into a final Kink Score out of 100.
  • Small states can rank highly on per-capita metrics and may be more sensitive to outliers.

Limitations

  • Search volume reflects online curiosity, not confirmed participation or personal preference.
  • The top kink data reflects a curated seed list and should not be read as a universal representation of all preferences.
  • OpenStreetMap store data depends on local tagging coverage and may not capture every adult-oriented retailer.
  • Population-normalized metrics use the denominator named in each column. Units differ only for readability.
